Learning as I go, from making smarter business decisions, to photography, to shipping has been quite an experience! The challenges definitely are many! Starting as a one-woman show, with a big dream is scary. What obstacles and challenges have you overcome along the way? My first sale came from my Facebook launch! I held an exclusive launch sale and ran a Facebook ad promoting it. I am at the point now where I have my preferred brand list and know what styles sell well! How did you get your first sale? I’m also very choosy on the brands I want to do business with – they must have high integrity, reputation, and allow for high quality at affordable price-points. My original launch was actually delayed because I sent my first 5 shipments of inventory back to the warehouse! I hand-picked each piece and was extremely picky concerning quality and fit.

What did it take to get your first products in stock? Has that changed since you started?Ĭurating a collection of styles in the beginning stage involved a TON of trial and error. We also send out notes of encouragement with every order to lift women up – that’s where my heart lies. Oak + Ember was born from my travel inspiration – from Deadwood, South Dakota, to Grapevine, Texas, to Valdosta, Georgia, I loved the small-town feel and wanted to incorporate that in my boutique. Oak + Ember is a passion project of mine that started out of a desire to help women feel beautiful both inside and out, alongside superior customer service and attention to the smallest of details. We were originally based out of Houston, Texas but recently relocated to a much colder state – Wisconsin! Sure! My name is Shelby Mellom and I am the owner of Oak + Ember Boutique, a trendy yet classic women’s apparel boutique. Other: “Thirsty Thursday” menus feature specialty burgers and beverages full bar with cocktails wines by glass and bottle. We’ll give it time and return after it becomes what is destined to become we’re sure it will be just fine. It also is most welcome to the downtown district, with its wine list, craft cocktails and friendly attitude.

Look, Ember & Oak clearly is in a long test phase and not one thing criticized here can’t be fixed quickly and simply. Otherwise, service was on-point and atmosphere, basic we dined in the spacious, plain dining room, on glass-topped tables, because of the weather.

The chunks of candied banana were terrific. The cake was far too dry, the “charred” candy on the opposite side of the (big) plate had a torched surface but otherwise was just a big, solid marshmallow. I kept imagining chunks of the stuff on that bruschetta it would have been the perfect complement.ĭessert, malted flourless dark chocolate-almond s’more cake ($12), drew sighs from a pair of chocolate and marshmallow lovers.

We devoured the thing, which was full of flavor, without a touch of oiliness or waste, and served over parsnip puree with fresh peas and wild mushrooms in a rather classic style. Back to a really satisfying, unique dish: crispy pastrami-spiced duck confit ($25).
